A Class Act or Two

Poetry I Iove

THE MOTHER TO HER INFANT
image
This Lullaby Rhyme is by Thomas Miller,
the basket maker who attracted some notice as a writer for and about children.

Slumber, my darling, no danger is near,

Thy mother sits by thee to guard thy repose;
Though the wind roars aloud, not a breath reaches here
To shake the white curtains which round thee do close:
Then slumber, my darling, and sleep without fear,
Thou art safe from all danger, my dearest, while here.

image

What is it the angels do unto thee say
When thou does lie smiling so sweet in thy sleep?
Are they trying , my sweetest, to lure thee away,
And leave me alone in my sorrow to weep?
Oh, sometimes I fancy they whisper thy name,
And would fain bear thee back to the land whence they came.

Then never, my darling, when thou growest old

Forget her who on thy sweet infancy smiled,
To whom thou wert dearer than jewels and gold,
Who studied thy looks and thy wishes, my child,
Who, when thou didst need her, was never away,
In health or in sickness, by night or by day.

Perfection I think, thank you Thomas Miller.

Seligor's Newsreel

Hello, today is the 27th September, mother now been unwell for nearly five months. Her condition is deteriorating and it is a very sad time for everyone. Life seems very upside down, sort of living between life and death. In the home one passes from the light into the dark, then when leaving you go from the dark into a grey mist for your thoughts are totally within her room and the hurt you left behind. Crying helps and our prayers are always with her, if there was a wish then it would be that she leaves to join her husband and son sooner rather than later, for then her pain would cease. Thanks for being patient with me, love and hugs Seligor. xxx

Reflex tears flush out the eye when it becomes irritated.

How old would Grandpa be???

Stay with this -- the answer is at the end. It will blow you away.

One evening a grandson was talking to his grandfather about current events.
The grandson asked his grandfather what he thought about the shootings at schools, the computer age, and just things in general.

Grandfather replied, 'Well, let me think a minute, I was born before there was :

television - penicillin - polio shots - frozen foods - Xerox or contact lenses

Ice-cream cones, phone calls, rides on a streetcar, and a Pepsi cost a nickel.

And if you didn't want to splurge, you could spend your nickel on enough stamps to mail 1 letter and 2 postcards.

You could buy a new Chevy Coupe for $600, . .

But who could afford one? Not many,

Which was too bad, because gas was 11 cents a gallon.

Also in my day:
"Grass" was mowed, "Coke" was a cold drink,

"Pot" was something your mother cooked in and the word "rock music" wasn't invented yet. "Aids" were helpers in the Principal's Office,

A "chip" was a piece of wood,

Hardware was found in a hardware store and software wasn't even a word.

There were no: Frisbees and the Pill was somthing you took for a headache.

Man had not invented:

Credit cards, laser beams or ball-point pens, pantyhose, air conditioners, or

dishwashers,

And the clothes were hung out to dry in the fresh air and
man hadn't yet walked on the moon.

Your Grandmother and I got married first, . . . And then lived together.

Every family had a father and a mother.

Until I was 25, I called every man older than me, 'Sir'.

And after I turned 25, I still called policemen and every man with a title, 'Sir.'

We were before gay-rights, computer- dating, dual careers, day-care centers, and group therapy.

Our lives were governed by the Ten Commandments, good judgment, and common sense.

We were taught to know the difference between right and wrong and to stand up and take responsibility for our actions.

Serving your country was a privilege;

We thought fast food was what people ate during Lent.

Having a meaningful relationship meant getting along with your cousins.

Draft dodgers were people who closed their front doors when the evening breeze started.

Time-sharing meant time the family spent together in the evenings and weekends-not purchasing condominiums.

We never heard of FM radios, tape decks, CDs, yoghurt,

We listened to the Big Bands, Jack Benny, and the President's speeches on our radios.

And I don't ever remember any kid blowing his brains out listening to Tommy Dorsey.

The term 'making out' referred to how you did on your school exam.

Pizza Hut, McDonald's, and instant coffee were unheard of.

We had 5 & 10cents stores where you could actually buy things for 5 and 10 cents.

And we were the last generation to actually believe that a lady needed a husband to have a baby.

No wonder people call us 'old and confused' and say there is a generation gap... And how old do you think I am?

I bet you have this old man in mind...you are in for a shock! Pretty scary if you think about it and pretty sad at the same time.

Are you ready ?????

This man would be only 59 years old.

  1. The Song of the Shirt by Thomas Wood

    09/30/09 16:41:05 | 0

    THE SONG OF THE SHIRT

    Thomas Hood,
One of the most lovable of English Poets, was equally
great in comic and serious verse. Only a powerful poet whose heart
had bled for the poor could have written these moving
and burning verses. It is well to remember in reading them that
their author could make us laugh as few others have ever done,
and that it is usually those who see the comic side of life who can best
understand and most suitably express its serious and tender side.

    With fingers weary and worn,
    With eyelids heavy and red,
A woman sat, in unwomanly rags,
Plying her needle and thread -
    Stitch! stitch! stitch!
    In poverty, hunger, and dirt,
And still with a voice of dolorous pitch
She sang the "Song of the Shirt."

    "Work! work! work!
While the @%+@ is crowing aloof!
And work - work - work,
Till the stars shine through the roof!
It's Oh! to be a slave
    Along with the barbarous Turk,
Where woman has never a soul to save,
    If this is Christian work!

    "Work - work - work,
    Till the brain begins to swim;
    Work - work - work,
Till the eyes are heavy and dim!
    Seam, and gusset, and band,
    Band, and gusset, and seam,
Till over the buttons I fall asleep,
And sew them on in a dream!

    "Oh, Men, with Sisters dear!
Oh, men, with Mothers and Wives!
It is not linen you're wearing out,
    But human creatures' lives!
    Stitch - stitch - stitch,
    In poverty, hunger and dirt,
Sewing at once, with a double thread,
A Shroud as well as a Shirt.

"But why do I talk of Death?
    That Phantom of grisly bone,
I hardly fear its terrible shape,
It seems so like my own -
It seems so like my own,
    Because of the fasts I keep;
Oh, God! that bread should be so dear
And flesh and blood so cheap!

    "Work - work - work!
    My labour never flags;
And what are its wages? A bed of straw,
A crust of bread - and rags.
That shattered roof - this naked floor -
    A table - a broken chair -
And a wall so blank, my shadow I thank
    For sometimes falling there!

    "Work - work - work!
    From weary chime to chime,
    Work - work - work,
    As prisoners work for crime!
    Band, and gusset, and seam,
    Seam, and gusset, and band,
Till the heart is sick, and the brain benumbed,
As well as the weary hand.

    "Work - work - work,
    In the dull December light,
And work - work - work,
When the weather is warm and bright -
    While underneath the eaves
    The brooding swallows cling
As if to show me their sunny backs
And twit me with the spring.

"Oh! but to breathe the breath
Of the cowslip and primrose sweet -
With the sky above my head,
    And the grass beneath my feet;
    For only one short hour
To feel as I used to feel,
Before I knew the woes of want
And the walk that costs a meal!

"Oh! but for one short hour!
    A respite however brief!
No bless'd leisure for Love or Hope,
    But only time for Grief!
A little weeping would ease my heart,
    But in their briny bed

My tears must stop, for every drop
    Hinders needle and thread!"

    With fingers weary and worn,
    With eyelids heavy and red,
A woman sat in unwomanly rags,
Plying her needle and thread -

    Stitch! stitch! stitch!
    In poverty, hunger, and dirt,
And still with a voice of dolorous pitch, -
Would that its tone could reach the Rich! -
She sang this "Song of the Shirt!"

  2. The CHILDREN! of MANILA! NEED OUR HELP!

    09/28/09 09:31:40 | 1

    SELIGOR'S CASTLE PRESENTS
A PAGE FULL OF TINY NURSERY RHYMES
    FOR THE VERY YOUNG

    Millions of massive raindrops have fallen on the ground;
They have danced on the house-tops, They have hiden in the ground.
They were liquid-like musicians, with anything for keys,
Beating tunes upon the windows, keeping time upon the trees.

SAD TO SAY THIS WAS NOT SUCH A NICE RHYME FOR THE CHILDREN OF THE PHILIPPINES, AND SO.....

Before I begin I should like to say how sad I am for all the Children made homeless by the terrible floods in Manila, if you can't spare any money, which I am sure we are all finding it a bit of a squeeze with this recession. Clothes, especially chldrens clothes will be so appreciated. The money can build new houses and help rebuild the destroyed homes and other buildings.
I am sure that most of the big named Charity Shops here is a list of what aid relief they need, this list Is fron online at the Red Cross.

Most urgent needs from the Red Cross
    www.RedCross.org.uk/Prepare

Food items: Rice, noodles, canned goods, sugar, iodized salt, cooking oil, monggo beans and potable water

Medicines: Paracetamol, antibiotics, analgesic, oral rehydration salts, multivitamins and medications to treat diarrheal diseases

Non-food items: Bath soaps, face towels, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, plastic mats, blankets, mosquito nets, jerry cans, water containers, water purification tablets, plastic sheetings, and Laundry soap

Rehabilitation Programs: Shelter materials for house repair

Survivors in Marikina City (28 September 2009)
In Manila, there is a thick coating of mud over everything the flood submerged
The storm, known locally as 'Ondoy', has left 86 dead and 32 missing. Over 430,000 people have been affected, with more than 115,000 of them in evacuation centres as of 28 September 2009. These figures are expected to rise as search and rescue efforts expand.
On asking around the web sites, I have found that most of the British Charity Shops and Agencys, will have the right way to go about sending these items to the Philippines without them ending up somewhere they shouldn't be.

  3. My Beautiful Mother-in-law

    08/31/09 16:38:50 | 0

    Hi once more, Seligor here.
Sadly I must continue in the same vain. Mum has now been moved to a nursing home on Flint Mountain. It is a beautiful home and the staff are wonderful. She is no better, nor is she very much worse. We go everyday to visit her and it is heart breaking to see this little lady curled up in bed. She can't speak or swallow. They have now fitted a peg into her stomach to feed her. It works well, wish it did more.
It is now four months and Winter and Christmas will soon be upon us. I have a lovely outing the other Saturday. It was my youngest Grandson's christening and as you can imagine with all the different families it was one big christening. Plus it was Jayden, the grandson's birthday and the birthday of his mum, my daughter Kayleigh. There are some wonderful pictures on Face-book, just look for Kayleigh Roberts or Seligor of course..
She also had a proposal of marriage from her partner Les the same morning, so there were many reasons for having a tipple or two, or three even. It's my birthday tomorrow,
imageMSN sent me a message to tell me so. imagevery strange, It must be cos I'm getting forgetful the nearer I get to 65.
well I'm off now, must go to bed. take care xxx Seligor

  4. update on my beautiful mother in law.

    07/29/09 18:20:04 | 0

Hello their everyone , so sorry I'm still not around but Mother is still with us but very, very weak now. Don't let me hear anyone say that seeing someone who has had a multiple stroke is easy..... it truly isn't. The pain is so bad and it must surely be a terrible thing to be on the inside of one.
My mum has been left without any speech, movement or swallow, she is a prisoner inside her body and there is no quick escape. I often thought what I would do if someone were to ask me to end it all, I now know what I feel, And even though she can't tell me I can see it in her eyes. The doctor's have told us there is no way back and three times now she has rejected the peg they have put into her stomach so they can feed her this disgusting, creamy, looking muck
that is suppose to keep her alive.
I honestly feel sorry for the doctors and the nurses, they know that the end is inevitable but they are bound by the law to feed her to keep her alive.

Hopefully all our prayers will be answered and my father in law will be able to come and take her to the other side. I love you Mum. Seli aka Dodie. xxx image

  5. Just an update to our home dilemma.

    07/08/09 13:23:30 | 0

Sorry, still away I'm afraid. Had a week of fear but the old love has battled her way through it and seems settled again. If she keeps up this small improvement, there is a chance she will be moved to a cottage hospital close by the mountain homestead. Keep safe everyone and take xxx Seligor
  6. My Absence, Seligor

    06/18/09 15:53:03 | 0

Hello Everybody. Sorry I have been away for so long but we have had a small crisis, I say small though I know deep in my heart it isn't.
My husband's mum had a stroke five weeks ago now and before that she was not wholly with us, had we known what it was leading to maybe we could have done more. It would have happened anyway as we found out after her admittance into the Maelor Hospital that she has two blood clots on her brain, one either side. Luckily the side that governs the movement, walking etc., has released its grip on her and she can at least move without any paralysis. Unfortunately, the other side hasn't been so lucky and up to now there is no positive movement in her ability to swallow or speak, slight loss of eye-sight and hearing. This means she must be fed continually through nasal - gastric tubes. Definitely not the nicest of procedures. At the moment we are looking at a long haul, if ever as usually there is some sign of release from the blood clot.
Anyway this is the reason for my absence, I'm afraid I had to close down quite a lot of my added sites and only left the castle open. Please forgive me for being so rude. And I hope to be here with some good news as the days pass.
Hugs and cuddles xxx xxx Seligor

  7. The Sounds Of Space, Here and There, should we say.

    04/06/09 13:20:52 | 0

The strangest thing about this Universe is the way we all live our lives either following the sheep or sitting on the fence like a frightened starling. I look around the various web sites and try to analyse the different minds that lie behind the many different sites, it isn't always easy.
This is a fantastic video playlist if you like music with a difference. There are thirteen different tracks, some of them may sometimes say "This video is no longer available" this happens if the music isn't played often. Just click on the actual pop up for the one and I think you will find it there. The second track is music from the Abyss in "Magna" style. after this the "Jupiter the bringer of Jollity", part of the amazing Planet Suit by Holst. Then Enigma with "The age of Innocence" followed by "The Beauty Song Dance, from the film "The House of Flying Daggers. This leads us into Elgar" and "Nimrod", which is one of the best of the "Enigma Variations" "Cymatics on Saturn," you might recognise as the Beauty Song once more but this time it has facts about "The Planet Saturn." with it.
It took me ages to get the right clips of the Aurora Borealis, the Winning Theme" Another of Holst Planet Suites. Now you have to wait a minute for this to get started, brilliant, It is called "Our Yellow Sun" accompanied by the one and only Cold Play. Before carrying on it's quite amazing how varied our solar system is and how wonderfully it adapts to music. This is "Partly Pluto" and Partly the Fantastic Pink Floyd. Phew! very short mind. I don't know if any of you have followed the Hubble Telescope, but here is a concise version which I call Chapter One, followed by Chapter Two., And the last Video, well that has nothing to do with the planets just The House of the Flying Daggers which I try to fit in on every adult video list. If you should ever want the playlist. Just pop along to YouTube, you will find all my video list under the word seligor. None of the actual video's were made by me, but each one was put together to make the complete list, Takes ages but great fun. Seli xxx image bye.
